Show & Tell

Representatives from different hospitals can give brief presentations that demonstrate their achievements and innovative solutions. Show & Tell sessions are designed to be short, informative sessions in the peer group meetings where “users teach users.” (Note that Commercial members may not offer Show & Tell presentations.)

Each Show & Tell session is specific to a particular module and should be about 15 to 20 minutes in duration. It can be as simple as a quick online demonstration, a handout of a unique report, a straightforward PowerPoint show, or just a speech that explains a helpful tip or trick. A Show & Tell presentation can be interactive with the audience and it should generate good discussion.

Western US Region Keynote Speaker

Andrew Schechtman, M.D., FAAFP

Working in a War Zone: A Year in Liberia with Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors without Borders

Andrew Schechtman, a family physician from San Jose, volunteered with Medecins sans Frontieres/Doctors without Borders (MSF) for more than a year during the height of Liberia's fourteen year civil war. After working in a 90-bed hospital in a remote part of the country, Dr. Schechtman became the only doctor for 50,000 people forced to leave their villages and move to refugee camps. As the war flared, Dr. Schechtman and his team relocated to the capital city, Monrovia, just ahead of the rebel advance. They set up an emergency hospital to manage war injuries and the growing spread of cholera, measles, and malnutrition. Dr. Schechtman will discuss his work with MSF/Doctors without Borders in Liberia and the plight of civilian populations living in a country at war.

Dr. Schechtman earned his medical degree from UCLA in 1993, completed residency training in family medicine in Martinez, California and studied tropical medicine at Tulane University's School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Dr. Schechtman currently serves on the faculty of the San Jose – O'Connor Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program and is an Adjunct Clinical Instructor with Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Schechtman also has an interest in the medical application of handheld computers. He founded MeisterMed in 2001 - a company that develops and publishes medical references for handheld computers and, most recently, launched ICDMeister Online, a web-based ICD-9 coding tool designed for doctors.
